Adobe’s new open source website

I lived through this at Novell. It is tremendously hard to move a company – culturally and in business model – to open source, even when everything points to open source as the solution to a company’s struggles.

Adobe has announced a spiffy new website to focus on its open-source activities. Glyn Moody covers the announcement and implies that it’s a welcome (but slow) move.

This might look like a small move for Adobe. But ask those involved in pushing the shift. I doubt it felt small for them.

He’s right. On both counts.

Yahoo launching front page open to others’ content

Bhat wouldn’t share details about whether the new home page fares better, either in terms of user engagement or revenue. However, because Yahoo plans to make its official home page announcement Tuesday while detailing second-quarter financial results, it’s possible Bartz may be more forthcoming than Bhat.

New Chief Executive Carol Bartz has been trying to light a fire under the company’s developers, but even this revamp is only is the beginning beta testing on Tuesday. The change will arrive in the U.K., France, and India later this week, in Spain and Mexico next month, and in Asia next year, Yahoo said. Users had no choice about earlier tests, but now they’ll be able to select it as default on their own by visiting http://yahoo.com/trynew or clicking on Yahoo promotions for the change.

“We’re pulling together everything about the user they care about, be it on Yahoo or off, to create a personally relevant experience,” Bhat said. “In a world like this, Yahoo needs to make the user experience come first.”

In addition, Yahoo is revamping its mobile site. One big feature: when users customize Yahoo for use with regular computers, that customization will carry over to their mobile version.

Yahoo's revamped front page.

The company also hopes for more success with advertisers. “We’re creating great opportunities for advertisers to target content and context,” he said, demonstrating a movie application that showed a prominent ad along with movie showtimes locally tailored for a particular user.

Long-coming changes
Newer Web sites change rapidly, but Yahoo proceeds at a relatively glacial pace to change its site, visited by a whopping 340 million people monthly.

Yahoo's new home page permits applications from Yahoo or others. This shows use of Facebook.

A significant redesign is finally coming to the Yahoo.com home page, one of the most well-traveled destinations on the Internet, and the company’s search page will follow suit starting next month.

Also coming in August will be the ability to select what type of news people can see, with a slider that moves on a spectrum between “fun” and “serious,” he said.

Yahoo announced the new front page plan in October 2007, recognizing that people wanted to get to other destinations on the Net besides Yahoo’s. It began “bucket testing” it a year afterward, trying variations of the new page on randomly selected users, some of whom squawked at the changes and their inability to revert.

Bhat did indicate, though, that things are moving in the right direction for the company.

Yahoo plans to let people in the United States start selecting a new, more personalized version of the home page beginning Tuesday afternoon. The revamp lets people select basic applications to use not just Yahoo sites, but also others’ such as eBay, Facebook, and Twitter, said Tapan Bhat, Yahoo’s senior vice president for consumer experiences.

“The home page was tested by thousands and thousands of people. We got tons of feedback–tens of thousands wrote about what they liked and didn’t,” Bhat said. “It was really key to helping us figure out what worked and didn’t.”

More changes
Opening up Yahoo’s content to other sites’ operations–and letting other sites use Yahoo data can use such as Facebook-like status updates–is part of the Yahoo Open Strategy. That effort, under way for well over a year, is designed to increase users’ activity on Yahoo, to draw more people to Yahoo, and to make the company a better partner for advertisers.

These applications are available on the left side of the page under a customizable section called My Favorites; hovering over them with the mouse pointer makes each application and its accompanying advertising pop up.

The effort is a centerpiece of Yahoo’s effort to revitalize its core business: showing content and accompanying advertisements to a large, general audience on the Net. Yahoo’s profitability for years has trailed that of its main rival, Google, which depends chiefly on search ads for revenue, and Yahoo faces increasing pressure from Microsoft’s online business and new arrivals such as Facebook as well.

There are about 60 applications available now, and more are being added daily, Bhat said. Users can create their own, too.

The My Favorites feature will arrive on Yahoo’s search page, too, making the search site and results shown on it into more of a portal to access content. Yahoo faces search pressure from dominant Google and now to a certain extent from Microsoft’s Bing, too. Even if it consummates a possible search and advertising deal with Microsoft, being able to show its own display ads in applications adjacent to search results could help the company extract more money from its search operation.

The new home page will become default for others when beta testing is done “in the coming months,” Yahoo said. The revamped search pages will enter bucket testing in August, meaning that users can’t choose to use or not use the new design.

“Our experience in our test indicates that people are excited about this home page. They feel this meets their needs and is fresh new look for Yahoo,” Bhat said. “We are designing the page around users. What we do know when design page that users like, they tend to get more engaged.”

Google crashes Wolfram Alpha debut party

The Wolfram Alpha engine is a Web service designed to process data from controlled, vetted sources of data–many not on the Web–then present the results in a way that lets people dig deeper into the subject. It’s something of a cross between a graphing calculator, repositories of scientific data, and a system to interpret questions posed in human terms.

One example: “When comparing Santa Clara county data to the national unemployment rate, it becomes clear not only that Santa Clara’s peak during 2002-2003 was really dramatic, but also that the recent increase is a bit more drastic than the national rate,” he said.

• Algorithms. Alpha must pick the right computational processes to present its results. “Inside Wolfram Alpah are 5 million to 6 million lines of Mathematica code that implement all those methods and models,” he said.

Google now lets people search public data sets.

Wolfram hopes the tool will help researchers perform scientific chores that before were possible but not necessarily worth their time.

The Alpha site will be publicly available “in a few weeks,” with free access to all users supported by sponsors and subscriptions for heavy-duty users who want the system to process their own data, Wolfram said.

Thus far, Google’s service includes data only from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population Division.

“We just launched a new search feature that makes it easy to find and compare public data,” Ola Rosling said of the service in a blog post. “The data we’re including in this first launch represents just a small fraction of all the interesting public data available on the web. There are statistics for prices of cookies, CO2 emissions, asthma frequency, high school graduation rates, bakers’ salaries, number of wildfires, and the list goes on.”

Wolfram Research CEO Stephen Wolfram

Updated at 3:12 p.m. PDT with further detail.

• Data curation. Wolfram Alpha uses public and licensed proprietary data sources, and the company uses automated processes and human choices to prepare the data. “At some point you need a human domain expert in front of it,” Wolfram said.

“We hope people will find this search feature helpful, whether it’s used in the classroom, the boardroom or around the kitchen table. We also hope that this will pave the way for public data to take a more central role in informed public conversations,” he said.

The service is based on Google’s 2007 acquisition of Trendalyzer, Rosling said.

“What’s the angle of sun at particular moment? Given 20 minutes, I could compute it and get it right, but I probably wouldn’t bother,” Wolfram said. “What Wolfram Alpha does is take that piece of scientific knowledge and make it immediately accessible to everybody.”

(Credit:
Stephen Wolfram)

Google didn’t immediately comment about whether the timing of its launch was coincidental, and Wolfram Research didn’t immediately comment on the Google product.

For example, people can ask about the molecular weight of caffeine, about the location of a gene in the human genome, the number of people named Andrew born in a particular year, the amount of fish produced in France, the life expectancy of 40-year-olds, and the performance of Microsoft stock–and then dig into the results. The height of Mt. Everest can be expressed in terms of the length of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Alpha’s underpinnings
Alpha has four main components, Wolfram said.

Wolfram has deep technical chops. He’s a MacArthur “genius grant” recipient who got his Ph.D. in theoretical physics at age 20, founded Wolfram Research to commercialize mathematics software called Mathematica that can perform a wide variety of computational and graphing chores. He also spent a good portion of the 1990s writing “A New Kind of Science,” a 1,200-page tome (also available online) that seeks to transform science by presenting a computational view of physics.

• Linguistic analysis to understand what a person typed. “I thought one of many things that could have gone wrong was that short, lazy things would (have) huge amounts of ambiguity,” for example figuring out whether “50 cent” had to do with musical artists or money. “That turned out to be not nearly as much of a problem as we expected.”

Gatecrashing Google
But another similar service is available today: a Google feature that can search public data and present the results graphically.

“Like interacting with an expert, it’ll understand what you’re talking about, do the computation, and present the results in such a way you’ll be able to understand what the consequences are,” Wolfram said in a talk at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society Tuesday.

• Presentation. “There are tens of thousands of possible graphs. What do you want to show people?” Wolfram asked.

Wolfram Research founder Stephen Wolfram publicly debuted his company’s forthcoming online “computational knowledge engine” Tuesday–but search Goliath Google launched a service of its own that bears significant resemblance.

Digg launches Firefox toolbar with live notificati

Digg’s creator Kevin Rose has put together a quick screencast of the toolbar in action, which I’ve embedded below.

Digg Firefox 3 Extension from Kevin Rose on Vimeo.

Digg has just released a new extension for Firefox 3 that integrates whatever page you’re on with the popular social news site. Included are handy things like a real-time pop-up window that notifies you when friends have dugg something, or when new stories hit the front pages of various sections. There’s also a toolbar that can be toggled on the top of your browser which shows you if a page you’re on has been submitted to Digg along with options to submit it yourself or read the user comments.

The extension only works in
Firefox 3 but joins a previously existing offering that displays most of the same information from a drop down command menu. The newer version has a much more svelte look that can be toggled to exist off-screen with a click of a button.

One thing that’s missing, and something I hope gets added in a future version is a way to get real-time notifications when certain stories hit the upcoming section. As I’ve ranted about before, the upcoming section is harder to parse than it used to be, even with the inclusion of the recommendation engine. Being able to pick out stories you want to hear about based on what site they’re coming from, or with certain keywords would make it an extension worth keeping installed.

Listening to the $6 million home theater turned up

The advantages of this power doubling aren’t theoretical, many 8 ohm speakers may in fact be closer to 4 ohms or less when producing certain frequencies (say 50 hertz). Impedance is rarely constant, it varies with frequency and the better amplifiers deal with that more effectively than lesser models.

I recently returned to the $6 million Kipnis Studio Standard for an afternoon of listening. Mostly to music and a bit of home theater fun, but the uber system’s effortless power is what really blew me away. I was listening to the 11,315 watt system turned up nice and loud, but I had no idea how loud. Luckily, Jeremy Kipnis had a sound pressure level meter handy, so I took a reading, 105 decibels. Whoa, that’s really loud, but the sound was so clean it didn’t hurt. Bear in mind I’m no fan of loud movie theaters or concerts–in fact I always wear hearing protection when I hear music or movies in public. But here with the KSS loud wasn’t a problem. I turned up the volume louder and louder, just to see how it would feel, and the sound just got better and better. If the goal of “good sound” is to reproduce music at the same volume as it would be in real life, you need a lot of power.

How many watts do you need?

Power is just one element of a great system, the speakers play their parts, and the CD player or turntable all need to be up to snuff.

(Credit:
Steve Guttenberg)

It depends, do you really think any of those “1000 watt” home theater in a box systems are remotely as powerful as a typical 50 or 60 pound 100 watt per channel stereo amplifier? No way, most HTIBs and $500 A/V receiver power ratings are wildly over inflated. Real power is never cheap, but if you like to listen loud, buy as much power as you can. Deciphering power specifications can be tough for the novice, but if the receiver or amp specifies its power output into 4 ohm speakers that’s a really good sign. Few receivers do because they cannot properly drive 4 ohm loads. Most high quality amplifiers that deliver 100 watts into 8 ohm speakers double their output to 200 watts into 4 ohms. Really high-end 100 watt amps double their power again into 2 ohms, right, that’s 800 watts a channel!

How much does it cost for the good stuff? To find out I will in the coming weeks and months put together a few high performance stereo systems for under $3,000.

Really loud doesn't hurt your ears when the system is up to snuff

Facebook kicks off developer funding competition

Additionally, FBFund has heretofore flown under the radar, unusual for something that has come out of a publicity magnet like Facebook–and some of the moderate press it’s gotten has been fairly negative. Throwing a contest is probably a decent way to drum up some attention.

Monday saw the kickoff of the competition’s Round 1, in which 25 winning proposals announced on September 22 will each be awarded $25,000. The winners of that round will have the option to apply for Round 2, in which five final winners will receive $250,000 to fund the development of their Facebook applications. Winners will also have access to “mentorship” from Facebook as well as a boost in publicity and marketing resources.

Developers, start your engines: submissions are now open for the developer application contest that Facebook created for its FBFund grant program. Winning developers, who submit business plans for their prototypical Facebook Platform applications, will receive between $25,000 and $250,000 in grant money. The company plans to give away $10 million total.

Facebook is drawing developer attention to its platform at a crucial time: first, it’s expanded its API to the Facebook Connect initiative; and second, it’s now competing for geek attention not only with rival social-networking platforms but also with Apple’s
iPhone, the hot platform du jour.

The contest was originally detailed at this year’s F8 conference, in which the 10 original FBFund selectees were also unveiled.

U2 signs 12-year deal with Live Nation

Live Nation, a concert promotion company that has already inked a so-called 360 deal with Madonna, announced Monday that it will oversee the Irish music group’s touring, merchandise, and Web site.

U2, one of the world’s biggest music draws, has signed a 12-year deal with Live Nation.

“We’ve been dating for over 20 years now, it’s about time we tied the knot,” lead singer Bono said in a statement. “With regards to U2.com, we feel we’ve got a great Web site, but we want to make it a lot better.”

(Credit:
PRNewsFoto/Live Nation)

The band’s recording and publishing deal with Universal Music Group remains intact.

Last year, Madonna walked away from a $120 million deal with Warner Music Group to sign a 10-year agreement with Live Nation. Madonna’s Live Nation deal contrasts with U2′s in that Live Nation has a stake in her entire career, including future music, movie, and TV ventures.

Live Nation has built a reputation for understanding the Internet and Web marketing. Fortune magazine published an excellent story about the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based company. You can read it here.

Video service Mogulus reels in Gannett funding

Besides cementing the relationship with what is probably its highest-profile client, Mogulus likely could use the extra cash: live video is bandwidth-heavy, and there are plenty of competitors in the field, from Kyte to Ustream to Justin.tv. Additionally, the company is working on supplementing its ad-supported free service with a paid offering.

Mogulus, a New York-based company that’s part of the crowded pack of live-video streaming sites, has raised a new round of funding from news media conglomerate Gannett, publisher of USA Today and about two dozen other newspapers.

Financial terms were not formally disclosed, but a source close to the deal told us that–consistent with blog reports–the capital is about $10 million.

So far, Gannett’s partnership with Mogulus has given the video site some bragging rights: when former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made some controversial remarks about the Robert Kennedy assassination in 1968, that interview had been recorded and live-streamed on Mogulus by one of the participating Gannett newspapers–the Argus Leader of Sioux Falls, S.D. Other newspapers picked up on the remark, and the rest is (recent) history.

The two companies have had a partnership in place for the past three months, and the new investment is considered to be an extension of the partnership.
